 BIO 2011 : Maryland’s Role and Sponsorship

Maryland, through the lead sponsorship efforts of the State’s Department of Business and Economic Development (DBED), the Technology Council of Maryland/MdBio, Inc. (TCM/MdBio), Montgomery County, and industry leaders such as MedImmune and HGS, has once again secured major visibility for the state’s industry at BIO 2011.

Through the BioMaryland Partnership Maryland has collectively achieved the highest level of corporate sponsorship, the Double Helix Sponsorship.

For Maryland’s sponsorship, our companies benefited through:

  • Strategic partnering meetings with other industry leaders
  • Maryland and its participating sponsors’ branding and broad visibility
  • Premier tradeshow participation, speaking roles, and international presence as a major bioscience cluster in the U.S.
  • Financially affordable opportunities for Maryland’s startup bioscience companies to participate and exhibit

Maryland’s high visibility role in the annual BIO conference continues to push the state’s bioscience industry to new levels of national and international recognition.

Maryland hosted BIO 2003 and BIO 2011 in Washington, DC where Maryland was the premier host of the event.

 Significant Outcomes

Increased visibility at BIO has resulted in increase traffic and interest in the Maryland Pavilion, its companies and organizations, as well as in the State. Positioning Maryland nationally and internationally as a prospective place to conduct business and establish facilities.

In BIO 2007 and 2008, DBED staff in partnership with representatives from Montgomery County, Frederick County and City, and the Baltimore region conducted 50-70 meetings and identified more than a dozen prospects, two dozen leads and a number of multipliers (industry consultants).

Some of the noteworthy attraction projects as a result of interactions at past BIOs include Qiagen NV (Germany), Xceleron, Inc. (UK), RNL BIO, Inc. (Korea), SNBL BioMedical (Japan), KeyGene (Netherlands), Micromet (Germany), Biomedical Research Models Inc. (BRM/Biomere; MA) and Acambis (UK/MA).
