Frontiers in Science and Medicine is a collaborative event, spearheaded by Johns Hopkins Montgomery County and Shady Grove Adventist Hospital, which included participation from more than 10 different Montgomery County-based companies and organizations. The event grew out of a collaboration among health-care providers, biotech companies, universities and research organizations that sit on the Rockville campus and is designed to help increase interest in careers in science and medicine among local students.
The students attending the Frontiers day are from Shady Grove Middle School in Gaithersburg, which is piloting the new 7th grade Investigations in Science curriculum. The main aim of the event is for middle school students to to learn first-hand about exciting career opportunities in medicine and science. Students spend the day participating in hands-on activities, have a “site tour ” of a company or research organization's laboratory, and engage in small group discussions with scientists, doctors, and non-scientific employees from local scientific organizations and companies.
Organizations participating in this event include Johns Hopkins University, Johns Hopkins Center for Biotechnology Education, Shady Grove Adventist Hospital, BIO, BioReliance, Blanchette Rockefeller Neurosciences Institute, Human Genome Sciences, J Craig Venter Institute, NIH Chemical Genomics Center, Maryland Biotechnology Center, MedImmune, Montgomery College, OpGen, Sanaria, Tech Council of Maryland, TissueGene, University of Maryland Center for Advanced Research in Biotechnology, and Universities at Shady Grove.
